Rotting Carrots
The typically-insightful Mark Steyn takes John McCain to task for recently saying that the United States' goal in fighting Islamist should be "to win the hearts and minds of the vast majority of moderate Muslims who do not want their future controlled by a minority of violent extremists. In this struggle, scholarships will be far more important than smart bombs."
I find the senator's thinking alarming too. Very disappointing.

Job Openings for Pandas
Another one of those largely non-biz-related "Center Column" articles on the front page of today's Wall Street Journal. You may have to be a subscriber to access it. [Seems old Rupert let me down on that point.]
"Literally, short of using a backhoe to dig up the backyard, I don't have a solution," he sighs. "We could keep a herd of pandas."
"to me the only thing that works is you cut it down, it grows back, you cut it down, it grows back, you cut it down, it grows back. And hopefully it doesn't grow back after the third time."
Mr. Gouin has simpler advice, though: "Don't plant bamboo."
